About Barrow upon Trent

Barrow upon Trent is a small friendly village nestling on the banks of the River Trent six miles south of Derby. It has a thriving Primary & Junior school, a village hall, a community park, a beautiful church, a licensed club and several activity groups who meet regularly.

Like most rural communities Barrow has its share of social, economic and environmental issues that can be addressed and dealt with through government funding. The way to unlock this funding is to have a Parish Plan in place which is like a company business plan for the village.

After an initial meeting, held in St Wilfrid’s in February 2008, it was agreed to set up a Steering Group to determine whether a Parish Plan for Barrow was a feasible proposition. With support from the Parish Council the application for a start up grant was made and accepted. The steering group aim to submit the completed plan in late 2009.

What is a Parish Plan?

A Parish Plan is one way that the Government hopes to give rural communities a chance to run their own affairs and set out what a Parish should look like and guide its future. It is a comprehensive action plan covering social, economic and environmental issues.

Questionnaires

The Parish Plan is based on the responses and comments from the people of the Barrow upon Trent parish. A questionnaire has enabled the steering group to take on board all of these points and begin to formulate the plan.

The questionnaires were circulated to every member of the parish in July 2008. We also had several open days in the village hall where the collated information was displayed and discussed.
